People travel across the country for cultural experiences, from museums to intangible cultural heritages (ICHs). He is also well-known among football fans for his love of the game and Cristiano Ronaldo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The revolution will be livestreamed<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>When Speed\u2019s first China stream came out on 24 March, netizens to state-owned media outlets in China praised the streamer for tearing down the \u201cChinese filter\u201d (\u4e2d\u56fd\u6ee4\u955c) created by Western media. It is, fittingly, a reference to a meme, the \u201cMexican filter,\u201d where Mexico and sometimes Middle Eastern countries are stereotypically portrayed on screen with a yellowish filter. Advanced transport ranged from bullet trains to EVs from Xiaomi and Huawei. This quickly earned him praise from <a href=\"https:\/\/m.jfdaily.com\/staticsg\/res\/html\/web\/newsDetail.html?id=886473\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">state-owned media<\/a>, saying a 20-year-old young man from the United States has \u201cdestroyed years of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zaobao.com.sg\/realtime\/china\/story20250403-6111176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">anti-China propaganda<\/a>\u201d. He also earned goodwill from ordinary netizens on Chinese social media. On Weibo, China\u2019s Twitter-like platform, topics such as \u201cIShowSpeed\u2019s China trip super successful\u201d (#\u7532\u4ea2\u54e5\u4e2d\u56fd\u884c\u6548\u679c\u597d\u5230\u7206#) and \u201cIShowSpeed \u2018seeds\u2019 China travel to foreigners\u201d (#\u7532\u4ea2\u54e5\u8ba9\u5916\u56fd\u4eba\u75af\u72c2\u79cd\u8349\u4e2d\u56fd#) <strong>reached <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/m.s.weibo.com\/vtopic\/detail_new?click_from=searchpc&amp;q=%23%E7%94%B2%E4%BA%A2%E5%93%A5%E4%B8%AD%E5%9B%BD%E8%A1%8C%E6%95%88%E6%9E%9C%E5%A5%BD%E5%88%B0%E7%88%86%23\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>number 6<\/strong><\/a><strong> and number 12 on the Hot Search list, with 12.36 million and 29.97 million views, respectively<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"my new chinese car\ud83c\udde8\ud83c\uddf3\ud83d\ude97 #ishowspeed\" width=\"520\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/SFE8KIh2TQA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, the livestreams showed the world that the people of China are far from the stereotype of being quiet and demure, to the degree of being inanimate. In fact, the broadcast shows that China, at least the megacities Speed visited, contains a vibrant internet culture, just as unhinged, if not more, than its American equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The society of online spectacles<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c\u62bd\u8c61\u201d (lit. abstract) is probably how most Chinese netizens would describe the style, especially the humour of Speed. Abstract humour generally denotes a combination of postmodern or post-irony humour and surreal or absurdist comedy. It <a href=\"https:\/\/36kr.com\/p\/3086828737411461\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">gained traction<\/a> in China in recent years, with not only comedians, influencers and memes but also in marketing campaigns. KFC\u2019s Crazy Thursdays are a prime example of that, merging the satirical and the nonsensical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"IShowSpeed Gets Shocked When His Tour Guide Started Speaking Chinese \ud83d\udc80\ud83d\ude2d\" width=\"520\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Em-RQZUPMEQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For better or worse, the trip to China of IShowSpeed was fraught with <a href=\"https:\/\/mp.weixin.qq.com\/s\/S1gnctaPczoguygvVCVVIA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">many such moments<\/a>. From sudden challenges and dance battles to borderline racist gifts like watermelons, bananas and a cotton bouquet, and of course, sudden choruses of the refrain from a popular Wowkie Zhang (\u5927\u5f20\u4f1f, also Da Zhang Wei) tune: \u201cnei nei neige\u201d (\u90a3\u4e2a, a filler word, lit. that) that sounds uncannily like the n-word to untrained ears. I say borderline because, in a post-irony context, they deliberately muddle the line between satire and menace, only to show a \u201cno-holds-barred\u201d comedy meant to provoke reactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-4-3 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Another racist Chinese fan hands iShowSpeed a cotton flower bouquet LIVE on stream\" width=\"520\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Zci73sUqvQ8?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Speed reacts to most of the antics with a quick wit to play along, and only on a few occasions did he deflect the situation by being utterly perplexed (such as being accosted by a self-proclaimed \u201cracist\u201d cosplaying as the \u201cSaiba Momoi says the N-word\u201d meme). However, many of these are taken out of context to show Chinese people as racist or used as a vessel to express the reposters\u2019 racist agenda, while they were likely just trying to out-abstract IShowSpeed for their \u201c15 minutes of fame\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Influencers of the world, unite!<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The most meme-tic episode during Speed\u2019s journey to the East was in the city of Chongqing. The city is often called an \u201c8D\u201d city for its mountainous landscape and confusing horizontal structure. Speed was shocked when he thought he had descended underground, only to find himself at the top of a skyscraper. With its horizontal, maze-like nature and trains going through buildings, the city has also been called a \u201ccyberpunk\u201d metropolis since early last year. Fittingly, the city is also \u201ccyber\u201d for its vibrant internet culture. That is likely why some of the biggest collaborations took place in Chongqing.&nbsp;Let\u2019s dive into the meme culture rabbit hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cSuper Idol\u201d is a meme song that began its life as a jingle for Watson\u2019s bottled water but took on a life of its own as a TikTok soundtrack for 1. Being a pure earworm and 2. Meme-able moments in the ad were recreated many times, especially when the subject splashes water from the bottle in the general direction of the camera. The most widely known creator of the meme is Tian Yiming (\u7530\u4e00\u540d), whose version is often added to random videos and is sometimes called the \u201cRickroll of China\u201d. Speed sang with Tian, and both splashed milk from a carton, trying to out-meme the meme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Super idol\ud83c\udde8\ud83c\uddf3 #ishowspeed\" width=\"520\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/fZWufgrkCcw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In Chongqing, of course, an American streamer cannot miss the opportunity to collaborate with \u201cChinese Trump\u201d, the Trump impressionist who does pitch-perfect accent work and body language without the effort of appearing blonde or artificially tanned. The two met in the back of a limousine, \u00e0 la the Lennon-Dylan meeting in Eat the Document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"iShowSpeed Meets The Chinese Donaldo Trump \ud83d\ude02\" width=\"520\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/jE2C9VuNnZc?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>On the iconic Yangtze River Cableway, Speed and team looked at the neon-lit, or rather, LED-lit nightscape, in a cable car decked out in LED lights. Speed met with his brightest collaborator, Tony from LC Sign, or as some call him on Reddit, \u201cthe (Asian) LED guy\u201d. Tony is known for his range of accent work and humorous signs. He showed his gifts to speed, from an underwhelming LED sign of \u201c@ISHOWSPEED\u201d to an over-the-top light with Speed and Ronaldo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"iShowSpeed Meets Tony LC SIGN\" width=\"520\" height=\"293\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/-OmOD430wbY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With his newly registered Douyin <strong>account getting more than 2 million followers in less than a week, on 4 April, Speed surpassed Mr Beast to become the most-followed American on Douyin with over 2.93 million followers. <\/strong>He also grew his YouTube subscribers by a million (from 37 million to 38 million) before he reached Hong Kong on 4 April. IShowSpeed seems to have found the <a href=\"https:\/\/news.ifeng.com\/c\/8iAzTWdCTh1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">winning formula<\/a> of being \u201cabstract\u201d and respectful at the appropriate moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote alignright\"><blockquote><p>IShowSpeedfound the winning formula of being \u201cabstract\u201d and respectful at the appropriate moment<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, the networking of influencers and netizens in and outside China does play a positive role in this time of division caused by tariffs and geopolitical tensions between China and the US.
